Flowers for Algernon
What would be you reaction if someone could increase your
intelligence 3x time faster? Intelligence is something that has always been
valued and highly respected. In “Flowers for Algernon”, you will read how a
mentally handicapped young man; Charlie was given an experiment to increase his
intelligence. Although some people thought it was wrong, Charlie felt that the
operation would worth it for several reasons.
First of all, Charlie discovered how people treated mentally
challenged people. At the beginning of the story Charlie didn’t know that his
friends were not real friends. It happened when Joe and Frank invited Charlie
to a party; they keep tripping Charlie and stole his clothes. After that
Charlie was aware of his friends that they like to have him around to make fun
of him. It helped him in his whole life after operation and it would worth it.
Later in the story, Charlie figured out how to line up the
machines in the factory (He had a job in a plastic box factory).he said, “It
will helped me save ten thousand dollars a year”. He gave him $25 bonus for his
good work. It wasn’t too much but it wasn’t too hard for Charlie for figuring
the setting of machines either. Charlie was happy and he would say that the
operation would worth it.
Charlie was getting even smarter than his doctors. First of
all, Miss Kinnian, she said, “Charlie, you’ll keep climbing up and up, and
see more and more”. He studies the
Algernon-Gordon Effect and declared that the operation was unsuccessful. Charlie
even knew more than his Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur. Charlie knew more languages
than Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur. Charlie thought it
was wonderful and he would say, “Operation would worth it”.
In short, even though the operation was unsuccessful but
after reading this it is true that it helped him discover how people treated
him, had a chance to experience smartness and much more. As Charlie said, “Im
glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I
never even new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it for a littel
bit.” We have to be grateful for a little bit. Sometimes we don’t have to
keep asking more and more without doing anything. We have to see people who are
worst than you. Charlie wanted more intelligence but at the end he had nothing.
